Lloyds Journey into Micro Hydro Power

CHELMSFORD — A water wheel will soon be turning again at the site of Chelmsford’s first mill — this time producing electricity.

Lloyd Greene, owner of the mill site, dam, and water rights to Russells’ Mills Pond, hopes to have an overshot waterwheel generating electricity for his own home this year, realizing a 20-year dream.

Greene bought the mill site in April 1954 after an exhaustive search of eastern Massachusetts. “This was no accident,” says 64 year-old Greene. “I searched for the perfect place and found it.” Read More

Chelmsford’s first micro hydroelectric plant at the Mill Pond has included completion of much of the supporting stonework for the wheel pit as well as the supporting concrete footings for the gear pit.

Green, owner of the property and pond water rights, started work on the plant in February, 1981.

An overshot water wheel measuring four feet in width and 12 feet in diameter will be placed in the pit and attached to the main shaft which will extend into the the gear pit located in the mill house. Read More
